Had a great weekend with dad at Young Championships - Julius placing both in the Medium and his second show at Advanced level. Then the best kind of Easter visitor in Sandy O'Callahan, we all had lots of laughs and such a lovely catch up - here's the remnants from trying to eat our way through $100 worth of fudge (most awesome prize ever). Anyone in Young any time must check out Poppa's Fudge and Jam Factory and a big thanks to all the other sponsors, committee etc for another great competition.
18 Mar 2014
What a view! Julius did a great job against some very experienced horses and although our teams might have had some hiccups, who cares when you get to compete at a fun event held at a gorgeous venue! Massive thanks to Alex Townsend, Derek, Geoff and the rest of the Wallaby Hills team for a fantastic day on Sunday!!
14 Mar 2014
Woohoo, looking forward to the Wallaby Hills Extravaganza this weekend. Here's what Brighton Saddlery had to say: "Brighton Saddlery is proud to announce that it will be represented at Wallaby Hill Equestrian Extravaganza this Sunday 16th March in the Team Triathlon Class. Come and support the Brighton Saddlery Team at Wallaby Hill!"
10 Mar 2014
Julius is officially an Advanced horse!! His last comp was Nationals in October at Elementary and Medium. Yesterday at Clarendon two Advanced tests gave us a placing and two qualifiers for the Sydney CDI*** even with killer sheep and some costly blunders!
22 Feb 2014
Woohoo our peaches - Champion Fruit Exhibit at Canberra Royal! The judges said when they cut and tasted them they were 'just perfect' - very serious business this fruit showing!!
9 Feb 2014
SS Welt Musik (bred and owned by Saffron Stables) on his way to winning both the 6yo Qualifier and the Novice 2.3 at Clarendon today with both scores over 70%. Little star!! And plenty of improvement still to come. Thanks to Horsepower for sponsoring the class, Dressage Bits 'n Pics for great photos as usual and the ever amazing Karen Lever - talk about strength in adversity!
1 Feb 2014
Great start to the 2014 comp year with Saffron Stables SS Welt Musik fourth in his first attempt at Medium level (skipping Elementary altogether!) and also qualifying for Dressage With The Stars 6yo class including an 8 for trot. Now to get rid of the displays of 'athleticism' in the canter but a big ask for a green horse and he did a great job in what must be only his eighth outing.
18 Dec 2013
Woohoo!!!! Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce done and dusted!! Many people have been involved here and there, and others have come and gone, but these four people have been with me the whole journey and I couldn’t have done it without them. Only doing three subjects some semesters may have made a five year degree into six, but thanks to my amazing family we also managed to keep up to six horses in work at any one time and compete at all the major Australian dressage shows, right up to Grand Prix. Their sacrifices and support I appreciate from the bottom of my heart.
5 Dec 2013
That's how you get your farrier to still turn up even on his birthday! Happy Birthday Tim!! A great mate and an integral part of our team. One of the busiest people I know, yet he still makes time to keep our horses performing at the top of their game and one of the few people who truly understands Julius. Thanks for everything!! Looking forward to a big party on Saturday.
2 Dec 2013
Grazing the horses in Werribee last night after our final competition for the year - now safely home from the Victorian Dressage Festival. Can't thank enough my amazing Dad who was prepared to come with me even when we knew we had a bad preparation. He proceeded to do everything while I poked around being useless with my back held together by kinesio tape and smothered in dencorub. Also to Mum and Hugh for once again keeping it all under control at home. Aside from catching up with our VIC friends, what I enjoy about the DF is the way the NSW crew band together - thanks guys for your support and a lovely time. While for us it was disappointing to have to scratch two horses just so that I had a more manageable load and to then not perform to our best, it was a solid reminder that the most important things are the precious people and animals who make the sport, and our lives, what they are.
22 Nov 2013
Once again we had a great night at the Dressage NSW Christmas Party held at Hawkesbury Race Club where we collected Jive Matrix and Simsalabim's Performance Medals.
3 Nov 2013
Sticky moment through the water but otherwise another fantastic weekend of eventing! Finishing on our dressage score for 5th out of 35th in the Ev95 at Canberra ODE. Thanks National Capital Horse Trials Association!!!!
27 Oct 2013
Yumm - great way to start the drive home from the 2013 National Champs. No amazing placings to report but very happy with the three horses, little mistakes in some tests were costly but they were still very respectable and the good bits are getting better and better - for where they're at in their training right now, and against huge fields of super combinations, I'm very proud of them! Onwards and upwards!!
20 Oct 2013
We did it!! 5th in the Prelim at the NSW Eventing Championships at Lynton! 7th after dressage, going clear and under time cross country and one rail in the showjumping saw the move up. Massive thanks to Erin Roddy and Robin Bell for the words of encouragement/verbal arm twisting (and the impromptu jumping lesson last week!), to Hugh Newall for putting in all the work and then letting me take over the ride two weeks ago when he went off to a training course in Singleton and to John Twomey for taking the blissfully ignorant dressage rider under his wing! Was a great weekend catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. Given that my last event was in May 2012 at Newcomers and the previous one was about 10 years before that, I've discovered some muscles I didn't know I had and was very relieved to get round in one piece! For video proof, check out the video of our cross country round thanks to An Eventful Life: http://www.an-eventful-life.com.au/riders/rider-videos-nsw-champs-2013-goulburn-jodie-newall-49
13 Oct 2013
Maybe I should wander around with my comp shirt on inside out more often, must bring good luck! Great weekend at Albury!! Madam doing two very respectable tests for Reserve Small Tour Champ, Julius placing in all his tests including a second this afternoon despite the heavens opening up with only a handful of tests left to go, and Saffron Stables' Musik was a star winning all four tests, all scores over 70% to take out both the Prelim and Novice Championships!! Huge thanks to my amazing Dad for all his help over the weekend and Mum for manning the fort back home while Hugh's away. What a team!
11 Oct 2013
So incredibly proud of these three kids. Emily and Argyle National Interschool FEI Champions after winning both the Prix St George and the Inter 1 with scores over 64% and the Inter 1 freestyle (following on from National PC Junior Dressage Champions last week)!!!! Tom placing in both his events - 6th in the National Tetrathlon last week and 5th National Interschool Eventing. And Sarah and the wonder pony Corey (Owendale Fleet Street) had their names called out 16 times - National Interschool Combined Training Champions, a win and a 6th in the dressage for 3rd overall, multiple hacking placings, Champion Arab, Champion Welsh, 3rd overall 80cm showjumping. Such a wonderful family who cherish their horses - congrats on all the hard work paying off, you truly deserve it.
6 Oct 2013
Not how I usually spend my weekends, but had a great day - thanks John Twomey!! Looking forward to Lynton Horse Trials in two weeks!
20 Sep 2013
Nawwww - Hugh’s precious pony Corey aka Owendale Fleet Street with the adorable Sarah Coggan enjoying the WA wildflowers 200km short of Perth where they'll represent QLD at the National Interschool Championships. Three years later and we still miss the little munchkin but we couldn’t have asked for a better home for Corey than this wonderful family, it’s always a joy to hear their latest results and we’re wishing them all the best for their trip! Nearly there!! xxo
17 Sep 2013
The Australian horse world has lost a very bright light today, and of course, far too soon. The Mike and Sandy dream team, more than the best stable managers that there will ever be, also friends – generous, thoughtful, funny, kind and always ready for a big hug. You guys made us laugh even when we were beyond stressed, and now you’re making us cry. Sandy and the whole family, we are thinking of you. Mike touched so many people, he will be sorely missed and the major championships just won’t be the same. Love from Jodie, Paul, Carolyn, Hugh and the many four-legged members of the family that you met over the years xoxo
9 Sep 2013
NSW State champs done and dusted for another year. So proud of the horses, SS Welt Musik placing in both Prelims, Simsalabim placing in the Novice, Jive Matrix placing in the Elementary and Danse Avec Moi overcoming tension only to put Grand Prix work into the Small Tour but learning all the time. Big thanks to Andrea from Saffron Stables for the ride on Sim and Musik, our sponsors Brighton Saddlery and James and Son Premium Feeds, the competition sponsors, judges, organisers and volunteers. The biggest shout out goes to Chelsea Rose who did a stellar job on her first grooming 'assignment' and was a delight to have with us, of course my awesome Mum for absolutely everything, and Hugh for manning the fort back home. Such a great team!!
11 Aug 2013
Blue ribbon for the blue eyed star! Great weekend at Clarendon - SS Welt Musik winning one Novice and second in the other with scores of 73 and 69%. Also owned by Saffron Stables, Simsalabim did a great job in her tests including 3rd in the Elementary and only 0.4 off the winner. And Madam is improving all the time with two very respectable tests and scores over 60 in both the Prix St Georges and Inter 1. Big thanks to Mum for coming with me and driving home while I work on the Uni assignment due tomorrow!!
11 July 2013
Jodie was appointed the NSW Chef D'Equipe at the recent National Young Rider Dressage Championships in Sydney. Her report appeared in Centreline and the online link is available here: http://dressagensw.com.au/default.asp?Page=33059
7 July 2013
Hugh and Sim (owned by Andrea Beatty of Saffron Stables) had their game faces on today! Second and fourth at the Australian Young Rider Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre! One proud big sister (feeling very old!)!
21 July 2013
Had a brilliant three days last week training with Christoph Hess. If he’d told me on Wednesday that on Friday I’d be riding Madam through the Inter 1 work in a snaffle bridle, no spurs, no whip, one-handed and in front of 150 people I would have laughed and then panicked. Instead he gave us exercises and insights that resulted in huge improvements in just those few days and that allowed us to do the demo like that on Friday – long way to go but I can’t wait to see how his ideas continue to impact my training over time. Thanks to Dressage NSW for organising the clinic and for the opportunity to attend, it really was inspirational! So proud of Madam!!
15 June 2013
So proud of Hugh Newall and Simsalabim at Clarendon today! Some little mistakes but still 67.7% and 3rd in the 2C and then 72.7% and winners of the 1D!! Awesome!!!
26 May 2013
So proud of Emily Coggan doing a super job yesterday in her first ever Prix St George with the fabulous Argyle. Five months ago, 15 year-old Emily hadn’t ridden above Novice level, but I had so much faith in the horse and the family and knew it was the right home. It’s funny how the world works, I recommended Argy to the Coggans a long time ago, when he was first on the market with Alexis Hellyer, but the day they called her he’d been sold to ‘a lady from Canberra’ who turned out to be the lovely Jenny Campbell. Twelve months later Jenny chooses to send Argy to me to compete and sell and this time the Coggans snapped him up before he was advertised. This is a combination that was obviously just meant to be! Thanks to Alexis for producing such a super schoolmaster, to Jenny for sending him to me and Emily and family (and coach) for doing such a brilliant job! Really makes it a pleasure to be involved in the sport!
6 May 2013
Thanks to all involved in the 2013 Sydney CDI*** - so very proud of Madam’s 6th in the CDN Prix St George and 7th in the Advanced freestyle (only 0.3 off 5th)!!! And here’s yet another vote for the ‘Apres Party’ to become a permanent fixture! Good times had by all. :) This competition is always one of the highlights on the annual calendar and this year certainly didn't disappoint!
24 April 2013
Big thanks to Scott Pollock for his lovely article in the lead up to the Sydney CDI***. We even made Eurodressage! http://www.eurodressage.com/equestrian/2013/04/22/team-newall-heads-2013-cdi-sydney
We certainly can't forget the wider team behind Team Newall - this involves our wonderful owners who trust us with their horses, the special coaches whose knowledge we get to benefit from, our sponsors Brighton Saddlery, KN Saddles and James and Son Premium Horse Feed for their support, the farriers, vets and other professionals who keep our horses fit and well, the girls who help out at home, the people who have believed in us and the special friends we meet along the way who make the journey so much better. This includes our funky group of agisters who certainly keep life interesting! Also to the sponsors, organisers, judges and volunteers of the wonderful competitions we get to attend, we wouldn’t have a sport without you!

Given that I was still on crutches on Thursday I was pleased just to make it through 14 tests spread over four horses at the Young Championships on the weekend but really happy with how the ponies went considering the lead up and that their jockey was tending on the useless side! Highlights were Julius (Jive Matrix) 1st and 4th in the Mediums for Reserve Champion behind Roger Fitzhardinge and Andrea Beatty's Simsalabim 2nd and 3rd in the Novices for another Reserve Champion, this time behind Amanda Shoobridge. Huge thanks to Dad for coming with me and being everything extraordinaire and Toni Pearce and Erica Malcolm for helping out a couple of times when things got busy! Massive thanks also to Hugh Newall for doing such a fantastic job keeping the horses in work for me while I was out of action. The YDA committee have to be congratulated and thanked for a truly fantastic competition and the sponsors for their generosity. We have an awesome little haul but I think the award for BEST PRIZE EVER goes to the $100 voucher from the Fudge and Jam Factory. Caramel fudge, come at me!! Speaking of which, I did learn on the weekend that grape flavoured Powerade and caramel custard donuts aren’t a good combination just before riding a test!
8 April 2013
Dad and I had a busy but fun weekend at Clarendon with four horses. Very pleased with them all placing in such classy fields and lots of good experience happening. Highlight of the weekend though was definitely Madam's 4th in her third ever Prix St George. Such a good girl!! Thanks again Dad and to Mum and Hugh for manning the fort back home xx
- Simsalabim (owned by Andrea Beatty) - Novice - 6th
- Garfunkle (owned by Toni Pearce) - Medium - 7th (66.813%)
- Jive Matrix - Medium - 8th (66.563%)
- Danse Avec Moi - PSG - 4th (63.596%)
29 March 2013
The lovely Argyle came to us for three months to be tuned up, competed and sold. We had so much fun and it was great that Jenny Campbell could make it to Melbourne to watch, but most importantly we matched him with the perfect home - he's become part of a wonderful family and is already out and about winning at Advanced level in QLD. What a legend of a horse. This is what Jenny had to say back in December "a fabulous day at Werribee yesterday watching Argy strut his stuff in the Grand Prix with the wonderful Jodie Newall. He loved it & they were a delight to watch!! Congratulations Jodie, you've done wonders with him!!!!"
18 March 2013
Busy Canberra Classic Championships – Madam 5th and 6th in the Advanced and 8th with a score over 60 in her second ever Prix St George, Julius top score of 68% in the Elementary for a 2nd and a 10th, and 66% in the Mediums for 2nd and 6th. Toni Pearce’s Garfunkle 4th and 5th in the Mediums with 65% in both after only four weeks with us and Andrea Beatty's Simsalabim at her second ever competition... 3rd and over 70% in both Novices to take out Reserve Champ from a huge class. Thanks to Mum and Hugh for their help yesterday, Jocelyn King for jumping in and plaiting Sim, Bec Armstrong chief cheer squad member and of course our sponsors Brighton Saddlery and James & Son Premium Feeds. That said, the MVP award has to go to Dad for the weekend – supporter/owner/groom extraordinaire – up shortly after 5am both mornings, one step ahead of me the whole time, we had good fun even with four horses and I couldn’t have done it without you xx
1 March 2013
Today we said goodbye to Hugh's beautiful horse Billy. He was one of the most amazing horses and once again, is gone far too soon. Billy might have been a fancy dressage horse but his passion was jumping and his best mate was Hugh - the incredible partnership between them created so many special memories for all of us as they lived their eventing dream. Thank you to Billy, a horse with so much heart, so much character and so much presence, it was a pleasure to watch your beautiful face light up in excitement on the way to the start box and even though you’d bounce around so enthusiastically in anticipation, we knew you’d bring Hugh home safely every time. We are so very lucky to have had you, a sweet-tooth adrenaline junkie with a heart of gold who would have jumped the world for Hugh. Hugh's words were "Rest in peace Billy. You were my best friend and the horse with the biggest heart. I'll love and remember you forever."
23 February 2013
Bit belated, but we had a great time at Dressage With Altitude! Very proud of Madam who is gaining confidence with each outing and held her own in a pretty tense atmosphere at Advanced level at her first CDI***. And Andrea Beatty’s beautiful German mare Simsalabim had her first EVER competition and was a star considering that she was playing broodmare only 6 weeks ago. Good experience for both girls and very excited for the future! Another round of thanks to all involved in a super comp (committee, sponsors, judges, riders and the list goes on) and to Sue Hearn for her warm up help.
31 December 2012
A massive thank you to everyone who has been part of a huge year for our team. Our sponsors: Brighton Saddlery, KN, James and Son Premium Feeds and Project Outcomes. Our owners who trust us with their wonderful horses: Sue Steggles, Jenny Campbell, Emily Coggan and an extremely exciting new partnership that has just begun – look out 2013. My coaches for their wisdom and support: Glennis Barrey and Sue Hearn with insights from Clemens Dierks and Roger Fitzhardinge. Jenny Carroll for her help and faith both on and off the horse and who definitely possesses magic healing hands. To our clients, pupils and agisters who are very much part of the team and make daily life so colourful. The incredibly tolerant people who rescue us in times of need and are experts in their fields - Tim McMullen, Ivan Boljun, Rebeccae Walche, Robin Bell, Andrew Dart and Toby Koenig. The ever-dependable Christine Randell who kept our heads above water by helping out around her TAFE studies and manning the fort for us. The volunteers and organisers of the many wonderful competitions we attended this year. And to my family for giving up so much and being there every step along the way. Our results this year were part of a long process – aside from client horses, all my competition horses we either bred or bought as foals and couldn’t be more proud of what we have produced. And to everyone who has been part of the journey in some way, big or small – thank you. To our all our wonderful friends, and particularly the many who have suffered through tough times this year, I truly hope that next year is a super one for you xoxo. Bring it on!!
8 December 2012
Awesome day in Werribee, VIC. Julius is the Saddleworld Dressage Festival Elementary Champion and Madam was 3rd in the Advanced Freestyle (her third comp at Advanced level). Sooooo proud of them, what stars!!
27 November 2012
Client Jenny Campbell says "Had the best ride this afternoon on my beautiful new red horse Samson! He took everything in his stride and was a joy to ride, and ohhhh that canter of his is just divine. Soo happy... just had to celebrate! Thank you Lizzie Wilson-Fellows!! And Jodie Newall for the super recommendation."
11 November 2012
MASSIVE but very rewarding day teaching at Hall Pony Club. Super keen riders and lovely weather to boot. Was good being back there, certainly brought back a few memories :)
14 October 2012
Lovely day with Dad at South Coast Championships - Madam won her first ever Advanced tests with great scores from both A level judges to take out Advanced Champion!! And last weekend at Clarendon Julius did his first Mediums for 4th and 7th, while Argyle's (owned by Jenny Campbell) Inter 2 and Grand Prix were a little rough around the edges I was pretty happy given that I'd only had the ride for 3 weeks. Such a clever bunch of ponies!!
3 September 2012
Great weekend at the NSW State Champs – Julius two 3rds and a 5th (would have placed in all four tests, but one judge had him 5th and the other 17th?!? So 9th in that one – still top 10 for all tests made it consistent from the big guy, particularly in full classes amongst amazing horses). Madam behaved fairly well for her, slowly getting more and more confident. Was great to see everyone and thanks to the organisers, volunteers and the team back home!
19 August 2012
ACT Dressage Association competition - very pleased with the ponies today. Went to present to the judge on Munge but endured a heart-stopping few moments after he got a random piece of wire wrapped around a back leg, launching himself in the air and then bolting. Thankfully it eventually came loose or we’d probably have ended up in Tasmania (of course the faster he went, the more noise it made, so the faster he kept going!). Pretty ...incredible that less than a lap of the arena later and he settled enough to go down the centreline for the 2D and do a second-place, 66-something% test. Then won the official novice with a whisker under 70%. Genie was very sensible on her first outing, although we did sort of make up our own test on account of some steering issues. But all in all she was a star, great to load on the truck, stood around very sensibly all day, good paces, very exciting for the future.
14 July 2012
Super proud of Hugh Newall and Mungie - winning the Prelim freestyle and placing in both their other tests at the NSW Young Rider Championships!! Whoop whoop!!
27 May 2012
A change of career might be on the cards after Billy and I just won the Newcomers class at Camden ODE by 17 penalties. Only disappointment was being 25 seconds too fast at the first minute marker on cross country and having to slow down-we were having sooo much fun!! Big thanks to Hugh Newall for lending me his super horse while he's away - it was an awesome weekend with awesome people!!
6 May 2012
Very pleased with Jasper's 6th in the open Inter 2 at the Sydney CDI*** yesterday! And just had loads of fun as a demo rider in the judges' clinic with Stephen Clarke-president of the ground jury for the London Olympics.
3 May 2012
Very pleased with the boys at the Sydney CDI*** with Jasper 63.7 and 2nd by 0.4 in the u25 Inter 2 and Julius 6th in the first round of the 6yo.
22 April 2012
Woohoo Jasper wins the Inter 2 and the Grand Prix to take out Central Coast Big Tour Champion, Madam 3rd and 7th in the Mediums with a PB over 66% and Munge and Billy (Hugh Newall's eventer) placed in the top 8 in the Novices! Very clever kids!!! Thanks to the great committee and to Dad for his awesome grooming skills! Now the trip home and an assignment due tomorrow. Fun fun!!
14 April 2012
Stoked with Jasper winning the Grand Prix at Clarendon today!!! Just wait til we get rid of the glitches! Biggest lesson of the day though - don't jump over fences in white jods because getting caught on the wire and ripping a hole in the bum is not only very obvious, but is logistically difficult to cover up for the rest of the afternoon!!!
25 March 2012
Super pleased with Jasper, who was pretty brave in the freestyle last night in such a huge atmosphere-9th in our first CDI-W at Dressage With The Stars!!
23 March 2012
Phew big day at Dressage With The Stars in Melbourne - 10th in the Grand Prix despite a few mistakes so through to the freestyle tomorrow night!! Julius went top 10 yesterday so had the second round today - pretty tense in the atmosphere but finished 9th in the country!! Not bad considering he was worked 3 times in the 4 weeks leading up to the show. Couldn't ask for a better or more patient farrier and support team who got him here!!!
18 March 2012
Very pleased with the ponies-Munge a win & placing in the Prelim, Madam placing in the Medium and Jasper winning Big Tour Champion at the Canberra Classic. Now home to work a few more and get stuck into uni work :)
27 February 2012
Brighton Saddlery: "The latest Horse Mag is out. We have a double page ad featuring our sponsored rider, Jodie Newall riding in her KN Concerto saddle."
5 February 2012
Super horses at Shoalhaven Championships - Hugh & Munge placed in both their tests, Madam placed in both her mediums but Jasper was the boy in the blue both in the Inter II on 61.6 and again in the Grand Prix on 64%. Little ripper!!
30 January 2012
Very glad to be home after a big 10 days in VIC - first Treehaven with Jasper winning both the Inter 2 and the Grand Prix on 61.9 and 60.7 and Julius winning the 6 year old on 7.44, then Boneo CDI*** with Julius again taking out the 6 year old class and Jasper surviving the scary indoor for 62 and 5th in the Inter 2 and a quieter Grand Prix for 4th. So very proud of the clever boys!! Huge thanks to Nikki for looking after all the creatures back home and my super mum for coming with me!!! And well done to Hugh and Dad for conquering Tassie's Overland Track!
15 December 2011 - Team Newall News
Phew since our last update we’ve certainly been making things happen so I’ll try to keep each bit brief! We had the NSW State Dressage Championships in September where Julius braved the mud to place in both the Prelim and Novice classes. Then it was off to Bowral Dressage Championships on 19 September where Julius was second in both Novices (to a different winner each time) so ended up equal Novice Champion with Gill Rickard, however Gill snuck in on a countback and Julius got Reserve (still a fantastic result in a quality field). Then we had the Dressage NSW competition at Clarendon: Hugh and Billy won both Associate Novices, Julius placed in his first Elementary with a qualifying score and Madam placed in one of the Mediums. By now it’s mid-October the Albury Dressage Championships: Saturday saw 6 tests – Munge in the Prelims and Julius and Madam in the Elementaries. All three horses placed, Julius won one Elementary and Madam won the other, relegating Julius to third after a silly shy brought his score down. This meant he tied for Elementary Champion, getting Reserve on a countback once again! Sunday saw 8 tests in the space of 6 hours – Munge and Julius in the Novices, Munge was top ten but Julius stole the show winning both tests and convincingly taking out Novice Champion. Madam placed in the Mediums and Jasper was 3rd and 2nd in the Prix St George at our first show together after only 2 weeks!
Then we had a quiet period for exams and it was off to the Victorian Dressage Festival in December. By this point Jasper and I had only been together for 10 weeks, and he’d spent the previous 6 months out in the paddock, so it was a steep road! Julius was 2nd and 5th in the Novice classes which were full classes with reserve lists. Jasper and I were 9th in the Grand Prix and 4th in the Aachen Challenge, only missing a spot in the final by 0.4%. It was a fantastic finish to the year.

August 2011 - Trials and Tribulations - Team Newall News
So far 2011 has certainly been a rollercoaster. Despite excellent qualifying results throughout January and February for the Australian Young Horse Championships in March, a broken toe the night before competition put an end to expectations at Dressage With The Stars and resulted in a long drive home from Melbourne. After spending April on crutches things turned around with outstanding wins and placings at the Sydney CDI*** and Central Coast Championships in May. Time went too quickly and before we knew it, after years of planning, we were off on our trip overseas in June/July. This was a fantastic time and the learning experience from watching both warm up and competition at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen has got me working on a few different ideas at home.
Our first outing since getting back was at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre on Saturday, after being invited to attend the selection event for the Australian Future Squad with my young horse Jive Matrix C. Having had an interrupted preparation, I couldn't have asked that Julius go any better in the indoor in front of the national selectors and a good crowd. We eagerly anticipate the results, although proudly note that Julius was one of the youngest horses there. We now look forward to the State Championships in Tamworth in early September, the National Championships in Sydney in October and the Victorian Dressage Festival in Werribee in December. Further good news to us has been the continued success of Hugh's pony Owendale Fleet Street who we sold to the Coggan family from QLD in 2010. Hugh and Corey won many championships in various disciplines through to National level, and the mighty Sarah Coggan, at only 10 years of age, has continued this tradition taking out championships left, right and centre before the new partnership's first anniversary was even celebrated.
I just want to say a big thank you for your support since Donovan's death. I'm still trying to reply to all the letters, emails and other messages I have received. It has been truly touching. Donnie's tribute and some photos are published at http://www.horsedeals.com.au/index.php?p=viewGalleryEvent&showID=14691 You may not be aware that we also lost Rastus two weeks before Donnie. He was a youngster we bred, and despite a rocky start as a foal (two plasma transfusions, a couple of joint flushes and various courses of antibiotics) he grew into himself. At three years old he not only had beautiful markings and paces, he also had an outstanding temperament and I couldn't wait to break him in before the year was out.
These sorts of events certainly put everything into perspective and my favourite quote still rings so very true: "Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men, men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given, than explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing."
Here's to the rest of our competition team stepping up and filling the gaps, and to a safe and successful upcoming campaign.
Take care.
Kind Regards,
